I've got nothing positive to say about the colonialist programme with which he's most associated but #Kipling's short stories are a marvel. His prose is so controlled and modern, he throws us into minimally specified contexts, and he can sketch a character or mood with just a few words.
One example I've always loved is his Dayspring Mishandled (from Limits and Renewals). There's so much going on with this story.
